PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method where a treatment object at least containing a rare earth element and an iron group element is subjected to oxidation treatment, and is thereafter, a treatment environment is transferred to the one in the presence of carbon, and heat treatment is performed at 1, 000°C or higher to separate the rare earth element from the iron group metal as an oxide so as to be recovered, in which, even in the case the heat treatment temperature lies in a low temperature, the rare earth element is macroscopically separated from the iron group element as an oxide so as to be recovered.
SOLUTION : Provided is a method at least comprising a step where a treatment object subjected to oxidation treatment is added with a lithium source and a phosphorous source to control the atom composition percentage of the rare earth element, lithium and phosphorous contained in the treatment object to the rare earth element of 8 atom% or lower, the lithium of 20 to 36 atm% and the phosphorous of 56 atm% or higher, and is heat-treated at 1, 000°C or higher in the presence of carbon to separate the rare earth element from the iron group element as an oxide.
