This invention inexpensively provides a phosphor that comprises a material comprising oxides and nitrides, exhibits good red color reproduction, and emits little light outside the luminosity function. The composition formula for said phosphor is AE(l)Si(m)O(p)N(q) : Z, wherein AE represents at least one of the alkaline earth metals calcium, strontium, and barium; Si represents silicon, O represents oxygen, and N represents nitrogen; Z represents a rare earth element; and l, m, p, and q represent the amounts of the corresponding elements. This phosphor has an excitation spectrum in the 300-550 nm wavelength range, and the emission spectrum of this phosphor has a center wavelength of approximately 620 nm and a narrow full width at half maximum of approximately 80 nm. The chromaticity coordinates of this phosphor are (0.620, 0.378). Urea is used in the firing of this oxynitride phosphor.
