PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a new rare earth complex effectively light-emitting by excitation using visible light. SOLUTION : Provided is a rare earth complex provided with : a rare earth atom; and a ligand coordinated on the rare earth atom. The ligand includes a compound having a condensed polycyclic aromatic group, and the condensed polycyclic aromatic group being the residue of a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound represented by formula (1)[in the formula, Ar1 and Ar2 denote a hydrogen atom or a mutually coupled one aromatic ring or a group forming condensed aromatic rings including two or more aromatic rings].
