PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for producing 4-ketozeinoxanthin, α-echinenon, zeinoxanthin, and lutein, the rare carotenoids which have an α-carotene backbone, do not exist or hardly exist in the natural world, and are hopeful of their usability to human health.SOLUTION : Such as 4-ketozeinoxanthin, α-echinenon, zeinoxanthin, and lutein, carotenoids which have an α-carotene backbone, can be efficiently produced by introducing and expressing carotenoid biosynthetic genes including two kinds of lycopene reductase genes in combination with carotenoid biosynthetic genes derived from bacteria, in host cells.
