PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnesium-based alloy for an extension application having good ductility, moldability and processability at properly low temperature desired by a manufacturer and suitable for rolling. SOLUTION : A magnesium-based alloy consists of 0.5 to 4.0 wt.% of zinc, 0.02 to 0.70 wt.% of rare earth elements containing gadolinium or a mixture thereof and incidental impurities, where the rare earth elements may be yttrium and/or gadolinium, the magnesium-based alloy may have a crystal particle refining agent and the crystal particle refining agent may be zirconium.
