A hydrogen storage alloy and a manufacturing method therefor. The chemical composition of the alloy has a formula of R(1-x)MgxNiy, where R is one or two elements selected from rare earth elements comprising Y, x satisfies 0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.3, y satisfies 2.8 ≤ y ≤ 3.8, and, by means of X-ray diffractometry in which Cu-Kα emission lines are set as an X-ray source, the ratio of the maximum peak intensity appearing in the range of 2θ = 31°-33° relative to the maximum peak intensity appearing in the range of 2θ = 41°-44° is 0.1 or less (including 0).
