The invention relates to a process for separating rare earth metal ions from a liquid solvent, several rare earth metals being present in the solvent and a rare earth metal ion being oxidized to a tetravalent state or a rare earth metal ion being reduced to a divalent state. The invention is characterized in that the solvent is a non-aqueous solvent which has a higher oxidation stability or a higher reduction stability than at least one rare earth metal.
