PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a microwave electrodeless lamp capable of stably emitting ultraviolet rays having high emission intensity and simultaneously reducing a used amount of mercury, and a light irradiation device using the microwave electrodeless lamp.
SOLUTION : A microwave electrodeless lamp receiving microwave energy to emit light includes : a tubular discharge container made of silica glass; and rare gas and a luminescent material sealed within the discharge container. The luminous material contains mercury, an iron simple substance, iron iodide, iron bromide and thallium iodide. The sealed amount of the mercury is 0.3×10-5 -1.4×10-5 mol/cc, and the sealed amount of the iron simple substance is 10.0×10-5 mol/cc or less.
