The invention relates to an adiabatic coolant for cooling below 7 K, the adiabatic coolant comprising : a compound according to formula (1) : (Yb1-xAx)a(Ni1-yBy)b(C)c (1) wherein A is one or more members selected from rare earth elements other than Yb; B is one or more members selected from the group of members consisting of Al, Ga, Ge, Fe, Mn, V, Co, Cu, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au; C is one or more members selected from the group of members consisting of Sn, In, Tl, Pb, and Bi; x is in the range of 0 to 0.9; y is in the range of 0 to 1 when B is one or more selected from the group consisting of Al, Ga, Ge, Fe, Mn, V, Co, Cu, Rh, Ag, Ir, and Au; y is in the range of 0 to less than 1 when B is Pd or Pt; and wherein a, b and c satisfy the following conditions : a = c 0.25a ≤ b ≤ 4a.
