PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for producing a rare earth magnet superior in both of a coercive force performance and a magnetization performance. SOLUTION : A method for producing a rare earth magnet comprises the steps of : producing a sintered compact having a structure including a main phase and a grain boundary phase, and expressed by the compositional formula, (Rl)x(Rh)yTzBsMt (where Rl represents at least one light rare earth element including Y, Rh represents a heavy rare earth element consisting of at least one of Dy and Tb, T represents a transition metal including at least one of Fe, Ni and Co, B represents boron, and M represents at least one of Ga, Al and Cu; 27≤x≤44, 0≤y≤10, z=100-x-y-s-t, 0.75≤s≤3.4 and 0≤t≤3, provided that they are all expressed in mass%); producing a rare earth magnet precursor by performing a hot plastic working on the sintered compact; and performing a thermal treatment on the rare earth magnet precursor with a quality-modification alloy melt including a transition metal element and a light rare earth element under an atmosphere at a temperature of 450-700°C, provided that the quantity of the quality-modification alloy melt is in a range between 0 and 5 mass%, exclusive to that of the rare earth magnet precursor.
