Blocking catalyst (1) for reducing nitrogen dioxide content in an exhaust gas stream (2) flowing through an exhaust gas system (3) of an internal combustion engine, preferably diesel motors, comprises a substrate provided with a coating, which reduces nitrogen dioxide proportion flowing through the exhaust stream. The exhaust system exhibits an oxidizing catalyst (4) for forming nitrogen dioxide and a downstream arranged particulate filter (5) for binding soot particles, and simultaneous and/or subsequent reaction of the soot particles with nitrogen dioxide formed by the oxidizing catalyst. Blocking catalyst (1) for reducing nitrogen dioxide content in an exhaust gas stream (2) flowing through an exhaust gas system (3) of an internal combustion engine, preferably diesel motors, comprises a substrate, which is provided with a coating, which reduces a proportion of nitrogen dioxide flowing through the exhaust gas stream. The coating exhibits at least two elements of rare earth metals, which are present in the form of a salt, an oxide or elementary, and in a concentration of more than 300 g/m 3>in the coating. The exhaust gas system exhibits an oxidizing catalyst (4) for forming nitrogen dioxide and a downstream arranged particulate filter (5) for binding soot particles, and simultaneous and/or subsequent reaction of the soot particles with nitrogen dioxide formed by the oxidizing catalyst. An independent claim is also included for the exhaust gas system of the internal combustion engine, comprising : the exhaust gas stream flowing through an exhaust gas purifying device, which exhibits the oxidizing catalyst; and optionally the particulate filter, where the blocking catalyst is arranged downstream of it for the reduction of nitrogen dioxide content in the exhaust gas stream flowing through the exhaust gas system.
