PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a material and a method for efficiently and inexpensively extracting a rare earth element.SOLUTION : In the method for extracting a rare earth element, a rare earth element is solidified as a fluorinated rare earth by adding a fluorine ion to an acidic solution including the rare earth element, and the solidified fluorinated rare earth is separated from a liquid phase. Furthermore, the method includes : an adsorption step of bringing an adsorbent into contact with a solution to be extracted and allowing the adsorbent to adsorb an objective metal in the solution, wherein the adsorbent can adsorb the objective metal selected from rare earth elements, and the solution to be extracted is obtained by dissolving the solidified fluorinated rare earth; and an objective metal separation step of bringing the adsorbent which adsorbed the objective metal through the adsorption step into contact with a back extraction liquid and allowing the objective metal adsorbed by the adsorbent to move into the back extraction liquid.
