PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a new compound having magnetic properties applicable to a magnetic recording medium by using a rare earth compound having a ThMn12 type structure, a magnetic storage medium using the same, and a method of producing the same.
SOLUTION : A rare earth compound according to the embodiment of the present invention has overall composition represented by formula 1 : (R1(1-x)R2x)aTbMc (in the above formula, R1 is at least one type of element selected from a group consisting of Sm, Pm, Er, Tm, and Yb, R2 is at least one type of element selected from a group consisting of Zr, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Lu, T is at least one type of element selected from a group consisting of Fe, Co, and Ni, M is boron, x is a number from 0 to 0.5, a is a number of 6.0 to 13.7 atomic%, c is a number more than 0 atomic% and less than or equal to 12 atomic%, and b is a number represented by 100-a-c atomic%), and has an amorphous grain boundary phase existing between main phases by using a ThMn12 type of crystal phase as the main phase.
