PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for producing a spherical rare earth oxide powder which has a large particle diameter and a large specific surface area, and is almost free from aggregation, good in flowability and easy to handle.
SOLUTION : The method for producing a rare earth oxide powder having an average particle diameter of 10-100 μm and a BET specific surface area of 10-50 m2/g is characterized by adding, as precipitant, urea and hexamethylene tetramine in a molar ratio of 1 : 0.1 to 1 : 10 to a solution containing rare earth ions, then heating the resulting solution to a temperature of 80°C to the boiling point, and firing a formed hardly soluble precipitate.
