PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for uniformly and efficiently introducing an activating metal into a zinc sulfide phosphor precursor, while suppressing remaining of carbon and excess incorporation of sulfur in the phosphor precursor, so as to produce a high luminance zinc sulfide phosphor. SOLUTION : A method for producing a zinc sulfide phosphor precursor comprises : preparing a mixed reaction liquid by adding to an organic solvent an aqueous solution containing a compound containing at least one element selected from copper, silver, manganese, gold and rare earth elements, a zinc compound and at least one of ammonium sulfide, ammonium hydrogensulfide and ammonium polysulfide; heating the mixed reaction liquid to cause azeotropy of the water and the organic solvent; and recovering only water obtained by condensing steam generated by the azeotropy, whereby while removing water from the mixed reaction liquid, the objective sulfide is formed in the mixed reaction liquid.
