Conventional reactions for yielding alkali metals are low in yield, and the amount of alkali metals that can be yielded within a limited volume has been restricted. The amount of an alkali metal that can be yielded per unit volume is heightened by a process for producing an alkali-metal cell, the process being characterized by including a step in which an alkali metal halide and an alkaline-earth metal azide are imparted to a structure disposed inside a starting-material holder and a step in which the alkali metal halide and the alkaline-earth metal azide are heated to yield an alkali metal and the yielded alkali metal is transferred to a cell that communicates with the starting-material holder, wherein the ratio of the effective surface area to the apparent surface area of the structure is greater than 1.0 but less than 200.
