PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide photocatalytic glass which exhibits sufficient photocatalytic activity under visible light, and is easily synthesized and can be mass-produced.
SOLUTION : The photocatalytic glass is obtained by subjecting a composition containing 0-30 pts.wt. of an alkali metal oxide, 0-30 pts.wt. of an alkaline earth metal oxide, x pts.wt. of a transition metal oxide and (70-x) pts.wt. of SiO2 (wherein the total amount of these compounds is 100 pts.wt., and x is a number of 30-65) to a high temperature heat treatment. A method for producing the photocatalytic glass comprises heating a mixture, obtained by mixing a raw material of the alkali metal oxide, a raw material of the alkaline earth metal oxide, the transition metal oxide and (70-x) pts.wt. of the SiO2, at 1, 000-1, 400°C to melt the mixture, then cooling the resulting melt to obtain a photocatalytic glass precursor, and subjecting the obtained precursor to a heat treatment at a temperature of 600-1200°C.
