The present invention addresses the problem of providing a method for collecting a rare earth element from a material of interest containing at least the rare earth element and an iron-group element, which can be used as a simple recycle system that can be conducted at low cost. The method for collecting a rare earth element from a material of interest containing at least the rare earth element and an iron-group element according to the present invention, which is a means for solving the problem, is characterized by comprising at least the steps of subjecting the material of interest to an oxidation treatment, then changing the treatment environment for the material of interest to an environment in which carbon black is present, and then further subjecting the material to a heat treatment in an inert gas atmosphere or in a vacuum at a temperature of 1000°C or higher, thereby separating the rare earth element in the form of an oxide from the iron-group element.
