A fluorescent material which consists of both alkali-free glass and rare earth atoms, preferably 95 to 99.99wt% of alkali-free glass and 0.01 to 5wt% of rare earth atoms; and a process for the production of a fluorescent material, characterized by mixing alkali-free glass with a compound that contains a rare earth atom and pulverizing the obtained mixture. The fluorescent material and the process provide : a field of application wherein scrap alkali-free glass which has been recovered can be effectively utilized as a resource; a fluorescent material with a high luminous intensity; and a process for the production of a fluorescent material with a high luminous intensity, which includes using, as the raw material, scrap alkali-free glass which has been recovered.
