A method and an apparatus for determining a trigger condition for displaying a detected signal on a display (10) of an oscilloscope on the basis of a rare signal event in the detected signal determine a level-based and/or time-based frequency distribution (13) of level-based and/or time-based characteristic variables determined from samples of the detected signal in a predefined level or time pattern and compare the determined level-based and/or time-based frequency distribution with a predetermined level-based and/or time-based reference frequency distribution. A first trigger condition is then determined (11) on the basis of an identified difference between the level-based and/or time-based frequency distribution and the level-based and/or time-based reference frequency distribution. A trigger signal is finally activated if the trigger condition is exceeded or undershot in the detected signal.
