A process for forming a metal supported solid oxide fuel cell 10 comprises the steps of applying a green anode layer 3 including nickel oxide, copper oxide and a rare earth-doped ceria to a metal substrate 2, firing the green anode layer to form a composite including oxides of nickel, copper and a rare earth-doped ceria, providing an electrolyte 4 and providing a cathode 5, 6. The process may further comprise the step of compressing the green anode layer at pressures in the range 100 to 300 MPa. Firing of the green anode layer may occur at a temperature in the range 950 to 1100oC. The nickel oxide, copper oxide and a rare earth-doped ceria are preferably applied as an ink. Also disclosed is a solid oxide fuel cell 10 comprising an anode 3 including nickel, copper and a rare earth-doped ceria, a cathode 5, 6 and an electrolyte 4.
