PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To reduce the manufacturing cost of an optical amplifier.
SOLUTION : The optical amplifier comprises : a first excitation light source 16 which outputs an excitation light in a first wavelength; a second excitation light source 17 which outputs an excitation light in a second wavelength different from the first wavelength; a multiplexing unit 18 which combines output from the first excitation light source 16 with output from the second excitation light source 17 to output waveform multiplexed excitation light; a first rare earth addition medium 3 which amplifies input signal light by using the waveform multiplexed excitation light output by the multiplexing unit 18; a second rare earth addition medium 7 which further amplifies the amplified input signal light by using residual excitation light output from the first rare earth addition medium 3; and a power ratio control unit 19 which controls on the basis of the input level of the input signal light a ratio of the power of excitation light in the first wavelength to the power of excitation light in the second wavelength which are included in the excitation light.
