PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a translucent ceramic having high refractive index and also high light emitting efficiency. SOLUTION : The translucent ceramic has a composition containing a perovskite type compound ABO3(where A includes Ba) as a principal ingredient and a rare earth element R (R is at least one kind selected from Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb), wherein the rare earth element R is included in A site.
