Making a diene elastomer e.g. butadiene homo- or copolymer containing 90% of cis-1, 4 isomer and a polydispersity index of =2.1 comprises continuous and discontinuous polymerization of a diene monomer in the presence of a catalytic system, which comprises : optionally a conjugated preformed diene; salts of rare earth metals e.g. a salt of a carboxylic-/organic phosphoric acid; an inert hydrocarbon solvent; an alkylating agent comprising an allylic aluminum derivative (I); and halogen donating group e.g. aluminum alkyl halides, excluding aluminum alkyl sesquihalides. R1 : optionally saturated alkyl or hydride; R2 : allyl, preferably butadienyl, isoprenyl, oligobutadienyl or oligoisoprenyl; n : 1-3; and Al : aluminum.
