Disclosed is a preparation method of a catalyst for liquid phase hydrogenation of acetophenone in preparation of α-phenylethanol, including : adding water, a small alcohol, a Gemini surfactant and an organic pore-forming agent to a reaction vessel, followed by adding a silica sol-gel and stirring uniformly to form an aqueous silica sol-gel dispersion; preparing an alkaline precipitant and a mixed salt solution containing salt compounds of copper, zinc, a rare earth metal and an alkaline earth metal, adding the two together to the aqueous silica sol-gel dispersion, followed by precipitation, ageing, filtration, washing, drying, calcination and molding to form the catalyst. The silica sol-gel and silicate serve as a complex silicon source. The organic pore-forming agent is added before the precipitation process. The catalyst is modified by Zn, a rare earth metal and an alkaline earth metal. The catalyst not only has high activity and good selectivity in the liquid phase hydrogenation of acetophenone for preparing α-phenylethanol, but also effectively increases the liquid resistance of the catalyst, and has high strength and good stability.
