PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a compound catalyst having excellent heat resistance such that retaining high specific surface area even when used in high-temperature environment, not detecting an AECeO3 phase which deteriorates capability even after fired at 800°C for two hours, and controlled of crystallite diameter increase of CeO2; and a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas utilizing the same.
SOLUTION : This compound oxide includes 60-98 mass% in terms of oxide of a rare earth metal element including Y, Zr and Si; 1-20 mass% in terms of oxide of alkaline earth metal element, and 1-20 mass% Al in terms of Al2O3, where the rare earth metal element including Y, Zr and Si are contained such that the mass ratio in terms of oxide of Ce and at least one of rare earth metal element including Y but not including Ce, Zr and Si in the range of 85 : 15 to 100 : 0. The compound oxide exhibits ≥40 m2/g of a specific surface area by the BET method after firing at 800°C for two hours, does not detect AECeO3 phase by X-ray diffraction, and has a CeO2 crystallite diameter in (111) plane of 15 nm or less.
