PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for producing aluminum nitride powder having a low content of carbon in the grain boundary, excellent in sintering properties, and capable of obtaining a sintered body having high thermal conductivity. SOLUTION : In this method for producing aluminum nitride powder by a reduction nitriding method, a composition using each specific amount of alumina powder, carbon powder, a sodium compound, and an alkaline earth metal compound or a rare earth metal compound co-meltable with alumina under a reduction nitriding temperature is reduced and nitrided at a temperature of 1, 300°C-1, 750°C.
