This reflective dimming element is provided with : a dimming layer configured so as to react with hydrogen reversibly and thereupon exhibit a reversible change between a transparent state and a reflecting state; and a catalyst layer configured so as to accelerate the reversible reaction of the dimming layer. The dimming layer contains either an alloy that contains at least one element selected from the group consisting of Group 2 elements and at least two elements selected from the group consisting of Group 3 elements and rare earth elements or a hydride of the alloy.
