PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a zirconia type catalyst carrier capable of suppressing that rhodium has oxide-like properties on the surface of the catalyst carrier while suppressing the movement and sintering of rhodium on the surface of the catalyst carrier by the use of a rare earth metal oxide. SOLUTION : The zirconia type catalyst carrier is constituted by adding the rare earth metal oxide and at least one of silica and titania to zirconia and characterized in that a region rich in the rare earth metal oxide and a region rich in at least one of silica and titania are present on its surface. Further, an exhaust gas purifying catalyst obtained by supporting rhodium on the zirconia type catalyst carrier and a manufacturing method of the zirconia type catalyst carrier are also disclosed.
