Method and apparatus for removing a sulfur oxide and/or a nitrogen oxide from a regenerator flue gas discharged by a regenerator in a catalytic cracking apparatus and for recycling elemental sulfur. The method comprises the steps of providing a medium-temperature zone reactor and an optional high-temperature zone reactor, and sequentially passing the regenerator flue gas through the optional high-temperature zone reactor and the medium-temperature zone reactor. The apparatus comprises the medium-temperature zone reactor and the optional high-temperature zone reactor, where the high-temperature zone reactor is filled with a catalyst having a precious metal active ingredient and a rare earth metal active ingredient loaded on an inorganic oxide support, and where the medium-temperature zone reactor is filled with a catalyst having a rare earth metal active ingredient and optionally an optional transitional metal active ingredient loaded on an inorganic oxide support.
