The present invention provides : a rubber composition for a side wall which improves, with a good balance, low fuel consumption, steering stability, fracture resistance, total elongation and workability, and which can suppress occurrence of spew cutting during demolding of a tire; and a pneumatic tire using the same. The present invention relates to a rubber composition for a side wall which comprises, in 100 mass% of a rubber component, a total content of a butadiene rubber containing 1, 2-syndiotactic polybutadiene crystals and a butadiene rubber synthesized using a rare earth element catalyst of 5-60 mass%, a content of an end modified butadiene rubber of 7-60 mass%, and a content of an isoprene rubber of 20-70 mass%, and with respect to 100 parts by mass of the rubber content, the total content of a carbon black with a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of 25-120 m2/g and a silica with a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of 70-250 m2/g is 20-40 parts by mass, and the content of a zinc oxide is 3.6-16 parts by mass.
