PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a surface coated cutting tool which is especially excellent in the stability of a coating film at a high temperature. ŽSOLUTION : The surface coated cutting tool comprises a base material and a coating film formed on the base material. The coating film includes one or more layers. At least one layer among these layers contains rare gas elements. The layer containing the rare gas elements has a variable density distribution of the rare gas elements in the thickness direction of the layer. The ratio B/A of the rare gas element density B for the total of metal element components in the base material side region to the rare gas element density A for the total of metal element components in the coating film side region is set to be 0 to 0.1.
