PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for efficiently recovering a rare earth from a metal-containing material containing a rare earth by a simple treatment under mild conditions without requiring complicated treatment such as treatment using strong acid or strong alkali. SOLUTION : A metal-containing solution containing a rare earth is treated with anaerobic-cultured or aerobic-cultured iron-reducing bacteria to sorb the rare earth in the iron-reducing bacterial cell, which is then treated with acid to desorb the rare earth for recovery. Preferably, Shewanella algae is used as the iron-reducing bacteria, and the pH in the acid treatment is lower than the pH of the metal-containing solution.
