The invention relates to hybrid inorganic/organic luminescent nanoparticles having a core-shell structure, which can be used as markers for biological and medical use, and which comprise a core consisting of a nanoparticle of rare-earth oxysulfide having the formula (XaYb)O2S, where X is at least one non-emissive element belonging to the of lanthanide family, Y is at least one element belonging to the lanthanide family and emitting at emission wavelengths in the visible or near-infrared region of the spectrum, and a and b denote the number of atoms of X and Y, respectively, such that a+b=2, and said shell consists of a silica layer covalently functionalized by molecules having at least one free reactive group accessible at the surface of the hybrid luminescent nanoparticle.
