PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet crystal film (RIG) which has an insertion loss of less than 0.6 dB and which is produced with a high yield, and to provide an optical isolator.SOLUTION : The bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet crystal film (RIG) is grown on a non-magnetic garnet substrate represented by chemical formula Gd3(ScGa)5O12 by a liquid-phase epitaxy. In the RIG, the crystal film is represented by chemical formula Ce3-x-yGdxBiyFe5O12 wherein x and y satisfy relations 1.20≤x≤1.58 and 0.80≤y≤1.19. Compared with a conventional RIG, the RIG represented by chemical formula Ce3-x-yGdxBiyFe5O12 achieves an insertion loss of less than 0.6 dB and reduction in heat generation caused by light absorption at a wavelength of approximately 1 μm, and as a result, has the remarkable effect that the RIG is used as a Faraday rotator for an optical isolator in a high-output laser apparatus for machining.COPYRIGHT : (C)2013, JPO&INPIT
