PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To aim at improvement of a cycle life of a nickel-hydrogen storage battery with its capacity heightened with the use of a hydrogen storage alloy of a rare earth-Mg-nickel system as an anode, and improvement of low-temperature discharge characteristics and high-rate discharge characteristics. SOLUTION : The hydrogen storage alloy with the Ln containing Gd expressed in a formula : Ln1-xMgxNiy-a-bAlaMb(provided, Ln is at least a kind of element selected from rare-earth elements including Zr, Ti, and Y, and M is at least a kind of element selected from V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ga, Zn, Sn, In, Cu, Si, P, and B, satisfying : 0.05≤x≤0.30, 0.05≤a≤0.25, 0≤b≤0.5, 2.8≤y≤3.9) is used as an anode.
