A forgery-proof printing ink or the like, in particular for bank notes, identification cards or the like, characterized in that the same comprises nano to micro particles, which contain fine grains separated from each other in said ink and have a uniform grain distribution with a uniform grain size spectrum, said particles having been treated hydrothermally and temperature-treated up to a maximum of 650ºC and being made of cerium(IV)oxide that is doped with at least two trivalent rare earth metals in a quantity of up to 5.2 atom %, wherein the cerium(IV)oxide pigment in the printing ink can be excited by means of radiation with infrared laser light for the active up-conversion luminescence emission of light having at least two characteristic intensity maxima at different wavelengths in the visible range of the spectrum.
