PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet crystal film (RIG) capable of being produced with an insertion loss of less than 0.6 dB and a high yield, and to provide an optical isolator.
SOLUTION : The bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet crystal film is grown on a non-magnetic garnet substrate indicated by chemical formula : Gd3(ScGa)5O12 by a liquid-phase epitaxial growth method. The crystal film is indicated by chemical formula : Nd3-x-yGdxBiyFe5O12 and is characterized by satisfying 0.89≤x≤1.43 and 0.85≤y≤1.19. Compared to conventional RIG, the RIG represented by the chemical formula Nd3-x-yGdxBiyFe5O12, can achieve an insertion loss of less than 0.6 dB and a reduction in the amount of generated heat caused by optical absorption at approximately 1 μm wavelength, and as a result, has remarkable effects that allow it to be used in a Faraday rotator for an optical isolator in a high-output laser apparatus for machining.
