The present invention provides a cerium-based abrasive that can achieve an abrasive surface having a high abrasion speed and that reduces the occurrence of abrasion damage to the utmost. The cerium-based abrasive contains F, the rare earth element Ce, and one rare earth element (RE*) aside from Ce selected from the 14 rare earth elements that are Y, La, etc., and is characterized by the amount of F contained in the abrasive being 5.0-15.0 mass%, the proportion of the mass of cerium oxide within the equivalent mass of all the rare earth element oxides being 48-90 mass%, the proportion of the mass of the RE* oxide within the equivalent mass of all the rare earth element oxides being 8-50 mass%, the proportion of the total mass of CeO2 and the RE* oxide within the equivalent mass of all the rare earth element oxides being at least 98%, and for a rare earth element selected from the 13 rare earth elements resulting from eliminating rare earth element RE* from the 14 that are Y, La, etc., the proportion of the mass of each oxide in the ore of the 13 elements within the equivalent mass of all the rare earth element oxides being no greater than 0.5 mass%.
