PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method of manufacturing an isotropically shaped rare earth element-added cerium oxide powder containing a rare earth element such as La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Y or Sc at a high concentration. SOLUTION : To an aqueous solution containing a trivalent Ce ion, hydrogen peroxide water is added and then concentrated ammonia water is added to give a dispersion liquid containing cerium hydrate. The dispersion liquid containing cerium hydrate is aged to form cerium oxide microparticles and then ions are removed from the dispersion liquid containing cerium oxide microparticles, to give a cerium oxide microparticle-dispersed liquid. A metal salt of rare earth element except cerium is added to the cerium oxide microparticle-dispersed liquid and then an alkaline substance is added, to form a precipitate.
