PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a sand removing method which prevents a sand pump from being buried in earth and sand collected in a sand collecting pit at the beginning of sand removing operation. SOLUTION : In the sand removing method where water is discharged from nozzles installed in a trough of a settling basin and water discharge from nozzles of nozzle headers, provided in regions formed by dividing the bottom surface of the settling basin into a plural number in the water flow direction in the settling basin, is performed to each of the regions in a predetermined order in a state where water is discharged from the settling basin, thereby washing down earth and sand deposited in the regions to the trough to collect them into the sand collecting pit, and the earth and sand collected in the sand collecting pit is pumped and removed by the sand pump installed in the sand collecting pit, water is discharged from the nozzles installed in the trough and at the same time water is discharged from an agitating nozzle installed in the sand collecting pit, and operation of the sand pump is started.
