Identification of powders that can be used as construction materials in a layer manufacturing method, comprises mixing the powder with at least one salt of a rare-earth metal, where the salt has the property of exhibiting luminescence when bombarded with photons having a wavelength outside of the visible spectrum or with particle radiation. An independent claim is included for use of the method for coding information regarding the powder composition, preferably regarding the powder-manufacturer or -processor, or the production site of the powder.
