PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnesium alloy which has excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance without using special devices and processes, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION : In one embodiment, the magnesium alloy has a composition comprising Zn, comprising at least one element selected from Gd and Tb by RE atomic% in total, and comprising at least one element selected from the group composed of Al, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb by X atomic% in total, and the balance comprising Mg. In the magnesium alloy, the following formulae (1) to (4) are satisfied : (1) 0.2≤[Zn (atomic%)]≤5.0, (2) 0.2≤[RE (atomic%)]≤5.0, (3) 2[Zn (atomic%)]-3≤[RE (atomic%)], and (4) 0.05[RE (atomic%)]≤[X (atomic%)]<0.75[RE (atomic%)].
