PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a steel wire for carbon dioxide gas-shielded arc welding consisting of steel strands with which a bead of an excellent shape equivalent to that of an FC wire can be consistently formed even the wire is used with positive polarity when performing the carbon dioxide gas-shielded arc welding with high current such as a fillet welding and a multilayer welding of a thick steel plate, and to provide a welding method using the steel wire. ŽSOLUTION : The steel wire for the carbon dioxide gas-shielded arc welding consists of steel strands containing, by mass, ≤ 0.20% C, ≤ 0.3% Si, 0.25-3.50% Mn, ≤ 0.05% P, ≤ 0.020% S, ≤ 0.0080% O, 0.02-3.00% Al, 0.015-0.100% rare earth elements, and ≤ 0.0008% Ca.
