PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rubber composition for a tread from which rolling resistance characteristics, maneuvering stability, wet skid performance and wear resistance can be obtained with a good balance, and to provide a pneumatic tire having a tread produced by using the rubber composition. SOLUTION : The rubber composition for a tread contains a rubber component containing a butadiene rubber modified by a compound expressed by formula (1) : R1R2R3Si-(CH2)n-NR4R5 and a butadiene rubber synthesized by using a rare earth element catalyst, and silica, wherein the content of silica is 10 to 150 parts by mass with respect to 100 parts by mass of the rubber component. In the formula, R1, R2, R3 may be the same or different from one another, representing an alkyl group, alkoxy group, silyloxy group, acetal group, carboxyl group, mercapto group or a derivative thereof; R4 and R5 may be the same or different from each other, and represents a hydrogen atom, alkyl group or cyclic ether group, and n represents an integer.
