PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a new phosphine oxide, a method for producing the compound and a method for extracting rare earth metals by using the compound. SOLUTION : Tetraphosphine tetraoxide is expressed by formula (1) (wherein R1 and R2 are each aryl or the like; and n is an integer of ≥2). A rare earth metal complex coordinated with the tetraphosphine tetraoxide is obtained by contacting the compound with a rear earth metal salt in a solvent.
