Known protective layers with a high Cr content and additionally silicon form brittle phases that become more brittle under the influence of carbon during use. The protective layer according to the invention has the composition 24% to 26% cobalt (Co), 9% to 12% aluminium (Al), 0.1% to 0.7% yttrium (Y) and/or at least one equivalent metal from the group comprising scandium and rare earth elements, 16% to 25% chromium (Cr), optionally 1.0% to 4.0% rhenium, optionally 0.1% to 0.7% phosphorus, optionally 0.2% to 0.6% silicon, and nickel making up the remainder.
