PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare earth silicate single crystal which is prevented sufficiently from the occurrence of cleavage at the time of mirror-polishing a rare earth silicate single crystal. ŽSOLUTION : The rare earth silicate single crystal for use in scintillators, whose one face to all planes are mirror-polished and which is coated or wound around with a reflecting material with the exception of one of the planes treated with the above mirror-polish and which, just as in the same condition, is used in the close contact of the above reflecting material-free plane with a photomultiplier, is characterized in that the above single crystal has a structure which belongs to the space group of P21/c and furthermore whose one plane having been subjected to the above mirror-polish is inclined at an angle of 15° or more to a plane of (001)-17° and also crosses at a right angle to a (100) plane.
