Disclosed is a separation method which enables to efficiently separate and recover an organic metal compound, which is low in toxicity, from a harmful inorganic compound. Specifically disclosed is a separation method which is characterized in that an absorbent containing a rare earth metal compound is brought into contact with a material to be processed containing an organic metal compound and an inorganic compound for having the absorbent selectively absorb the inorganic compound in the material, thereby separating the organic metal compound therefrom. In a preferred embodiment of this separation method, the rare earth metal compound is an oxide, hydrate or hydroxide of at least one element selected from the group consisting of cerium (Ce), samarium (Sm), neodymium (Nd), gadolinium (Gd), lanthanum (La) and yttrium (Y).
