PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To perrorm criticality safety management without causing a substantial rise in cost when uranium whose enrichment is higher than 5 wt.% is used as nuclear fuel.
SOLUTION : In fuel rods 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 constituting a fuel aggregate, Gd composite oxides are added to low gadolinia fuel rods 16, 17 and 18 containing oxides of uranium whose enrichment is higher than 5 wt.%. The Gd composite oxide is expressed by a chemical formula for gadolinium and a rare earth element A except for gadolinium : A1-XGdXO2-0.5X or the chemical formula : A1-XGdXO1.5. Cerium Ce, Lanthanum La, Erbium Er and the like can be used as the rare earth element A.
